No Job For A Lady- The Autobiography of M. Phyllis Lose, VMD as told to Daniel Mannix
There are many books that I have read over my life about horses and the people who love them. In this series, I will be shinning the spotlight on the ones that have inspired me.
Shorty before I started my Holistic Hoof Care Journey, my Dad loaned me a Readers Digest condensed book that had 3 stories in it. The one that prompted him to bring it to me was titled “No Job For a Lady”. The story of the first woman to become a Equine Veterinarian in the United States. I wanted to be a Veterinarian when I was thinking about a career while still in High School. Dad was disappointed that he didn’t have the resources to send me to college. The condensed book was a good read, and I always wanted to read the full version. My husband and I were strolling through the Flea Market between Middleburgh and Preston-Potter Hollow, and to my surprise the “gem” was on a table of books for a few dollars.
I wasted no time and started to read it that evening. What an exciting and inspiring journey! I almost had a chance to meet Dr. Phyllis when she was in her 90’s, but as the day approached she wasn’t feeling up to traveling to the Equine Sanctuary where I provided hoof care, and where we planned to meet. She passed away shortly after.
As a Holistic Hoof Care provider for many years now, I can really relate to her words, “…in case you did not guess, I love horses. It is wonderful to be able to spend your life doing something that you love.”

PS… My Dad was excited when I embarked on my Holistic Hoof Care journey, and cheered me on with the rest of my family through my studies, Certifications, Practice, and beyond. It’s never too late to start your dream!
